The success of the business has been due, in large part, to the wonderful, loyal and long-serving members of staff. Sweetland’s is very fortunate in having several members of staff who have stayed with me for a very long time. I think this might be partly due to the sense of humour which abounds – a pre-requisite for joining the team as well as first class butchering skills, of course!
Sweetland’s has always tried to be supportive of the local community and charities and helps as much as it can. I has supplied (donated) flitches of bacon and gammons to the famous Dunmow Flitch Trials which take place every leap year, supports the annual carnival, sells poppies in the shop each year and a member of staff organises an annual coffee morning on the premises for Macmillan Cancer Support. Another member of staff provides a knife-sharpening service in return for a small donation to Macmillan.

The majority of the beef comes from just a few miles away, either Barnston or Great Leighs. It is dry hung on the premises, in the hanging room, for a minimum of 2 weeks.
The pork is supplied by Great Garnetts of Bishops Green, Barnston an award winning farm run impeccably by Johnathan and Julie Smith. The hams and bacon are smoked at Great Garnetts but the hams are cooked at our premises overnight.
Sausages are a speciality and are made on the premises. The traditional sausages (our most popular) are made, using the local pork, from a secret recipe, handed down from Peter’s grandfather. All sausages are made using natural skins and are hand mixed and hand linked. Other sausage recipes have proved very popular particularly during the bbq season, and new recipes are added from time to time.
Our Lamb is totally sourced, when possible, locally from Great Easton, Elsenham and Great Dunmow. It is also hung on the premises.
All our chickens are English with the majority coming from Suffolk.
All Christmas turkeys are local and free range. During the rest of the year we also source turkey breast locally.
All our range of BBQ meats are prepared on site. We make our own beef, pork, lamb and turkey burgers.
